Coros Apex 4: First Leaks Confirm Another New Coros Watch Is Imminent

More: Coros Apex 4 Review

The Coros community seems set to explode with excitement as the first leaks of the Coros Apex 4 (four!) have surfaced. Coros is lining up for another game-changing release in two case sizes.

Several things can be inferred from the images and prior releases. Added to that is an official announcement teasing the launch by Coros of ‘something’ on October 15th….oh, and about 10 photos of the darned thing shown here 🙂 Let’s explore.

Premium Design | High-End Materials

The initially leaked images were a render, showing a sleek, circular watch that builds on the aesthetic of the Coros Nomad and Pace Pro. On the reverse, the render declares its specs: titanium case, Sapphire screen, Barometer, 5 ATM water resistance, and Dual-Frequency GNSS.

These are definitely high-end specs. Titanium and Sapphire are reserved for most brands’ top-level products, and Coros will be no exception. The barometer and water resistance add little new, and dual-frequency GNSS is also nothing new for Coros—all those additional aspects of the product would be routinely expected for a new Apex.

Digging deeper and getting a ruler out, we can infer a 45/46mm case diameter and 22mm band width, likely the Coros copy of QuickFit. But since then, we have confirmed two case sizes—42mm and 46mm.

For comparison, here are the case sizes of existing Coros watch models. (Apex 4 confirmed with 42mm and 46mm options)

Model Case Size
PACE 3 42 x 42 x 11.7 mm
PACE Pro 42 x 42 x 11.8 mm
APEX 2 43 x 42.8 x 12.8 mm
APEX 2 Pro 46.1 x 46.5 x 14 mm
VERTIX 2 50.3 x 50.3 x 15.7 mm
VERTIX 2S 50.3 x 50.3 x 15.7 mm
NOMAD 46 x 46 x 14.4 mm

At the top of the watch render, there also appears to be a rectangular area 6 or 7mm wide, possibly a flashlight LED, but that does NOT appear to be the case from the actual photos, so maybe it is the internals for the barometer. Odd.

Then there are the more obvious two-button and digital crown details. The only thing to note here is that in some recent watches, COROS has moved the crown from the 3 o’clock position to avoid accidental presses—fair enough. Keep that.

There’s a dual-range barometer, and the battery life of each case size has been confirmed. This article also details a few other details, like voice notes that can be tagged to a POI/GPS point.

What else could be New?

The Apex 4 would not be a direct competitor to Garmin Fenix; that’s more the domain of Vertix. Yet Coros is still referring to Apex 4 as a ‘Mountain Watch’…make of that what you will.

Coros will be looking to differentiate its products from Garmin at similar levels, and one of Coros’s strong historical points is battery life. I have a sneaky suspicion that the next Vertix and this Apex will also remain on MIP displays (albeit a later generation of the tech).

When I last spoke to the brand, they were generally reticent about going down the AMOLED route. Pace Pro clearly shows they changed their mind for some watch models; however, their R&D might be slightly behind the curve, explaining slow uptake across the board.

Why Apex 4? Mystery of the Missing “Apex 3”

Strangely, version #3 of the product appears to have been skipped. Even stranger as 4 is an unlucky Chinese number – remember there was no Garmin Fenix 4. Coros is a Chinese company through and through, so… errr…I don’t know.

Stay Tuned for October 15th

As the real product is out in the wilds in China, more product details will likely be made available soon.
