Wahoo: Fix next week, but you can’t record your weekend rides yet

On August 22, Wahoo updated us to confirm that a firmware fix has been developed for the GPS bug affecting first-generation ELEMNT, BOLT, and ROAM bike computers. That’s the good news. The bad news is that the company has also stated it’s working all weekend to test and likely won’t have a solution ready until Tuesday.

The issue started around August 17th due to a limitation in older devices’ 10-bit GPS-time tracking system, resulting in many time and GPS-positional problems, including wrong workout date stamps (2006) and poor GPS tracks. Incredibly, such a ‘tiny’ source problem can impact how our bike computers work.

It’s a wake-up call to Wahoo and its competitors. Many of us keep our bike computers for 5-10 years, and the impact of working on some components in such old tech might be forgotten in many cases. Or, at least, forgotten until a problem occurs. As we’ve seen, once cyclists can’t record their ride and sync it to Strava, it’s almost like they never happened. The technical impact may be small, but the broader effect includes a reputational hit on Wahoo.

Wahoo handles the PR reasonably well, but people don’t forget these things.

Best Case: Wahoo releases a firmware fix on Tuesday, 26 August.
